Newcastle Escapes Relegation With 3-1 Win
Newcastle United can breathe a sigh of relief after finally climbing out of the Premier League relegation zone following a 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday night, 8 February.
Playing on their home turf at St James’ Park, the Magpies seemingly got off to a bad start when skipper Jamaal Lascelles scored an own goal at the 36th minute, thus opening the scoreboard for Everton.
Luckily, they evened the score a minute later when Toffees’ Mason Holgate scored an own goal, too.
Newcastle’s momentum continued when Ryan Fraser upped the score to 2-1 at the 56th minute; 24 minutes later, team-mate Kieran Trippier sealed the deal with a free-kick, thus lifting the club two points above the relegation zone.
Coach Eddie Howe praised the Magpies’ performance and for going unbeaten in four league matches, although he also urged his players to not get ahead of themselves.
“Consecutive wins in the Premier League are rare, they can change your status and elevate the club,” Howe said. “But we have to stay calm and focus on the next game. We are in a better place, but football has a way of twisting and turning, so we are not getting ahead of ourselves; we know how tough this league can be.”
